This is another highly specialized technique that demands a high level of technical expertise and extensive experience in the disposal of large aerial bombs.

On 23 March 2026, the field operations team of UXO Lao in Luang Prabang Province funded by the U.S Government successfully conducted the destruction of a large bomb, identified as an MK82 GPLD, weighing 500 pounds (approximately 226.7 kilograms), in Phik Yai Village, Luang Prabang City, Luang Prabang Province.

The operation was carried out safely and effectively. During the disposal process, the team applied a low-order detonation method, commonly referred to as the “round-tom technique.” This approach allowed for the controlled removal of the bomb’s tail section, followed by the safe burning of the internal explosive. This method is specifically designed to minimize the risk of a high-order detonation, thereby ensuring the safety of both the disposal team and the surrounding community.

UXO Lao will continue its efforts to clear and destroy unexploded ordnance, ensuring a safe environment for the livelihoods and daily activities of lao people of all ethnic groups, while contributing to the socio-economic development of the Lao PDR.
