On 2 June 2026, UXO Lao field team in Champasak Province, with support from the Government of Japan
, received a report from a resident of Khot Yai Village, Pakxong District, Champasak Province regarding the discovery of unexploded ordnance (UXO).
During vegetation clearance and land preparation for coffee cultivation, a landowner discovered two large explosive items located approximately 300 meters apart. The discovery was subsequently reported to UXO Lao Champasak field team for further investigation.
Following an on-site assessment, the team identified the first item as a SUU-14 cluster bomb dispenser containing both BLU-3 and BLU-24 submunitions. This type of discovery is relatively rare, as multiple types of submunitions were found within a single dispenser. The second item was identified as a 2.75-inch aircraft rocket. The field team will safely dispose of these explosive items in the next stage of operations.
Community participation is essential in reporting the presence of UXO in affected communities. Such information supports more timely and efficient survey, clearance, and disposal operations, helping to reduce the risks posed by UXO and improve community safety.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Government of Japan
for its continued support of UXO Lao’s operations in Champasak Province.
