The commemoration of International Mine Awareness Day, marked every year on 4 April, provided an opportunity to recognize the significant progress made by the UXO/Mine Action sector in Lao PDR in clearing explosive remnants of war, and highlighting considerable challenges that remain. In addition, high ranking officials and all delegation also visited the UXO Lao Visitor Center and UXO Lao field operation in the afternoon time of the same day in Phik Yai village.

During the Second Indochina war (1964-1973), more than two million tons of explosive ordnance was dropped in the country, making Lao PDR the most heavily bombed country in the world, per capita. It is estimated that 30% of the bombs failed to explode and continues to kill and injure people, and pose threats to livelihood, obstructing national socio-economic development.

Despite significant progress made with help of global donors and implementing partners in the last two decades, UXO Lao is facing a financial shortfall for sometimes that affects its operations in some provinces.

In light of this challenge, UXO Lao would like to appeal to international donors and development partners for continued support. The support is crucial for clearing UXO from the Lao PDR and to advance the national SDG 18 – Lives Safe from UXO, which is vital for our national socio-economic development.
